Margarita, with a straw
MARGARITA, WITH A STRAW – “A gorgeous coming of age story. So subtle and true.” – Jose Rivera (writer,‘The Motorcycle Diaries’)
A promising movie starring an unconventional French descendant (Kalki Koelchin) – ‘Margarita With a Straw’ is surely being awaited by one and all.
It is the story of Laila (played by Kalki Koelchin) who embodies a “brilliant mind trapped in a disobedient body”. An aspiring writer and a rebellious woman who suffers from cerebral palsy embarks on a journey of self-discovery as she leaves India (University of Delhi) for New York University. Laila falls repeatedly in love and yearns to have sex. She explores her sexuality and begins a lesbian relationship with a fiery young student activist called Khanum. (Sayani Gupta).
Laila is the reel version of the real life inspiration of the National Award Winning Director, Shonali Bose. The movie is inspired by the real life-story of Shonali’s younger cousin, Malini who suffers from cerebral palsy. Bose had asked Malini what she wanted for her 40th birthday and was stunned when her sister said that she wanted to have sex. This helped Bose in creating the character of Laila who yearns to discover her sexuality and break free from the bonds of her disability. Shonali has beautifully delved into the sensitive issue of sexuaity of the disabled in the movie.
The movie is scheduled for a World Premiere today (8th September,2014) at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) . Its international trailer is worth a watch!
