UN’s Bollywood gay rights video reaches 1m
The Welcome – United Nation Free & Equal ‘most watched ever’
AN OVER-the-top Bollywood music video produced by the United Nations as parts of its “Free & Equal” gay rights campaign has now reached more than 1.2 million people via YouTube.
The video opens with a man on the phone warning that “Today, Sir is coming with his special friend” and features Bollywood actress and UN Equality Champion Celina Jaitly.
For reasons not explained, it repeats “rum pum pum” at the end of most verses.
When two men hold hands, Jaitly explains through song:
It’s a new look. It’s a new attitude/ You might wonder where the old way of living has gone/ But who is worried about who likes what/ As long as in the world of love two people want to be with each other.
Charles Radcliffe of the UN Human Rights Office said the gamble had “paid off”.
Jailty herself is said to be “overwhelmed by the positive response” which promotes a change of attitude “in a wonderful light-hearted way through the universal language of music”.
