Rani to play Dawood’s sister in biopic
Biopics are the current trend of the season in Bollywood. After the success of ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ and ‘Mary Kom’ it’s now turn for a controversial figure’s life to be portrayed on celluloid. Rani Mukherji will be soon seen in a biopic on Dawood Ibrahim’s younger sister Haseena after proving her versatility with films like Black, Hum Tum, Veer Zaara and Mardaani. Filmmaker Apoorva Lakhia is working on the project and has decided to cast Rani for the lead role. Apoorva is known for making films like Shootout at Lokhandwala, Zanjeer and Mission Istanbul.
Haseena’s name first came into light in 1991 after her husband Ismail Parkar was gunned down by members of the Arun Gawli gang. His murderers were then shot down by Dawood’s subordinates in the infamous J.J Hospital shootout. Haseena then moved to Nagpada and soon became the ‘Godmother’ of the area. Following a massive heart attack on 4th July she passed away in a Dongri Hospital.
Lakhia’s film ‘Haseena’ would go on floors by November this year. Lakhia is in talks with Rani to essay the role and was in touch with Haseena and her family till late last year to ensure that every detail is captured right in the film. Apoorva had spent lot of time with Haseena to fully understand her life. Explaining the reason behind the director’s choice of actress, the source adds, “Apoorva believes that Rani will do justice to the role. She can pull-off the part with confidence and aplomb, which is why he zeroed down on her.”
Rani has shown interest in the project but is still in discussion with Apoorva and has not yet confirmed on working on this project. She has not yet worked on any biopic and this would be her first. She is also considering the idea of putting on weight to closely resemble Haseena. Apoorva will be soon planning workshops for his actors especially for Rani so that she can learn Haseena’s mannerisms right.
Rani’s remarkable acting in recent movies like Talaash and Mardaani has got her fame and if Rani gives a nod we are sure her performance in Haseena will be applauded too by the audience.
