There are many Bollywood movies which are inspired by books and novels. A lot of people think that it is only Chetan Bhagat books which are made into movies. However, one of the finest poets William Shakespeare’s plays and books have also been made into hit Bollywood movies. Guide, Devdas, 3 Idiots, Parineeta, Saawariya, Omkara, Hello, Saat Khun Maaf, Aisha, The Blue Umbrella and many more hit movies are based on famous books by authors like Shakespeare, Ruskin Bond, Jumpa Lahiri and Jane Austin to name a few.

Movies based on Chetan Bhagat’s books
3 Idiots (2009) It was loosely adapted from novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat . The film stars Aamir Khan,Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Omi Vaidya, and Boman Irani. It was directed by Rajkumar Hirani, with a screenplay by Abhijat Joshi, and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. 3 Idiots went on to become the highest-grossing Bollywood film.
Hello (2008) is based on novel One Night @ the Call Center by Chetan Bhagat . It has actors like Sharman Joshi, Sohail Khan, Gul Panag, Isha Koppikar, Amrita Arora andSharat Saxena. It also had cameo roles by Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. Directed by Atul Agnihotri. Hello had an average performance at Indian box-office.
Kai Po Che! ( 2013) is based on novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life by Chetan Bhagat. It starred Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkummar Rao and Amit Sadh while Amrita Puri plays the female lead. Directed by Abhishek Kapoor with music by Amit Trivedi and lyrics by Swanand Kirkire. Kai Po Che! is a Gujarati phrase that means “I have cut the kite.” Used most often On Makar Sankranti (known as Uttarayan in Gujarat) when one cut off others kite.
Movies based on Ruskin Bond’s books
7 Khoon Maaf (2011) , is based on Susanna’s Seven Husbands by Ruskin Bond, is about Susannna Anna-Marie ,femme fatale ,who murders her seven husbands in her unending search for her love . Just like the black widow spider ,she lures the men into her trap and then kills them.Ruskin Bond and Vishal Bharadwaj together extended the script from a 4 page short story. The film stars Priyanka Chopra in the lead role, with Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan, Annu Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh, John Abraham, Aleksandr Dyachenko, Vivaan Shah and Usha Uthup in supporting roles.
Junoon (1978) is based on A Flight of Pigeons by Ruskin Bond, set around the Indian Rebellion of 1857. It was produced by Shashi Kapoor and directed by Shyam Benegal, soundtrack by Vanraj Bhatia, and cinematography by Govind Nihalani. Its cast included Shashi Kapoor, his wife Jennifer Kendal, Nafisa Ali, Tom Alter, Shabana Azmi, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Naseeruddin Shah, Deepti Naval, Pearl Padamsee and Sushma Seth. The film also featured Shashi and Jennifer’s children Karan Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor, and Sanjana Kapoor.
Movies based on book by R.K Narayan
Guide( 1965) was based on critically acclaimed novel, The Guide by R. K. Narayan. It is a romantic Drama film film starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. It was directed by Vijay Anand, who also contributed to the screenplay. The film is widely considered to be one of the masterpieces of the Indian film industry.The movie proved memorable for its award-winning performances by the lead actors and memorable music by S. D. Burman. Time Magazine listed it at Number Four on its list of Best Bollywood Classics The film was a box office hit upon release.
A 120-minute U.S. version was written by Pearl S. Buck, and directed and produced by Tad Danielewski. The film was screened at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, 42 years after its release.
